About the event

SilverBackTrails will be holding a Basic Map reading session which is ideal for anyone who has little or no navigational experience or someone who wants to brush up on forgotten skills.  The day will be very low key with much of the session taking place in the classroom, covering map identification/ symbols, map orientation using land features and magnetic compass, reading and plotting grid references, compass bearings both magnetic and grid, plotting a bearing on the map and following a bearing, there will also be some input on recognition of features and contour lines. There will be a session towards the end of the day where participants will be able to utilise their new skills in the field.

There will also be some input into recognising features on the ground using contour lines and harnessing your technology to assist with your navigation.

All equipment needed for the session will be provided, however, participants should bring suitable clothing for the outside portion of the day.

Tea/coffee and biscuits will be provided, there will be approximately forty minutes set aside for lunch, there is a small kitchen at the venue so you can bring your own packed lunch. Alternatively, the Yorkshire Cycle Hub and its cafe are only 5 minutes drive away.

There is ample parking at the village hall for those taking part.

The session has proved to be popular and currently, there are only 2  places left cost is £28pp
