Goathland V Trigs Ultra Challenge 08/04/2023

Writer's picture: Adrian MartinAdrian Martin

The second iteration of our Goathland V Trigs Ultra challenge took place on Saturday 08/04/2023. There was a healthy turnout and the weather gods were feeling benign, sending us sunny intervals and light winds, which lasted throughout the day.

The course differed slightly from the year before and extended to just over 37 miles. Though still taking in 5 triangulation pillars, two of which had been used previously.

The route retained its circular course taking in Goathland Moor, Hole of Horcum, Cropton Forest, Rosedale Moor and Glaisdale Rigg before returning to Goathland via Egton High Moor and the old railway line which was joined near Beck Hole.

Made up of a natural smorgasbord of terrain ranging from open moorland to forest rides and ancient trods the route unfolds in front of the lucky participants revealing views stretching from one horizon to another. Showcasing the wonderful richness of history and wildlife that The North York Moors has to offer, from ancient crosses, burial mounds, and the workings of giants; to the solitary cry of the Curlew and the chattering of a Parliament of Rooks going to roost.

The first pair home was Stephen Kirk and Anthony Gerundini in a time of 6 hrs 36;21 top trotting, with some mighty fine photo taking...💪

Once back at Goathland Village Hall, all finishers received a bespoke memento, cloth badge and certificate to remind them of their day and achievement.

On the tucker front, there was a choice of vegetarian chilli, especially thrown together by our very own Head Chef Pete "Samosa" Goodwin, jacket potato cheese & beans, cake & biscuits all washed down with copious amounts of tea/ coffee and squash for all participants.

The first finishers and the spot prize winner also received one of our new SilverBack Trails headwear thingamajigs...( Sure to be a hit on catwalk and trail alike)

The full results list is as follows.

1 Stephen Kirk & Anthony Gerundini in a time of 6 hrs 36:21.

2 Matt Machouki & Nei Ridsdale in a time of 6 hrs 52:37, along with Ed Taylor-Garrett (Solo). Neil is a second-time finisher.

6 Kay Walters & Simon Walters in a time of 10 hrs:01:10, second-time finishers.

We had 3 participants who did not finish and a small number who did not start.

Thanks to everyone who entered this year we look forward to seeing you again next year for a more of the same but different V Trigs Ultra Challenge.

Lastly thank you to our SilverBack Wanderers, Kevin & Alison Hullah, Kath & Tim Hammond and Pete Goodwin who gave up their time to come and help out on the day, I would have had to work so much harder if you were not there...

Next year's outing will be "shoving off "from Goathland Village Hall at 08:30 am on Saturday 20 April 2024 and is now open for entries on Si Entry systems.

Until next year "trot on" 🦍

Adrian & Sam.

Thanks to Adrian & the Wanderers for putting on such a great event, and booking the weather. Highly Recommended. Neil provided the rogue-ish entertainment as usual 🙄 and was great fun to race with. Shout out to solo Ed Taylor-Garrett: Did it the Hard Way. Best wishes to your missing team mate's recovery.
